Call for ban on cat spikes

Now the head of the JSPCA is warning Islanders that they could face prosecution if an animal is found to have injured themselves on the sharp spikes, which can be bought online for less than £10.

Stephen Coleman’s warning comes after a cat suffered cuts and puncture wounds when it fell onto the sharp spikes that had been attached to a fence between two neighbours in St Helier.

Mr Coleman, who also called for the spikes to be banned, said there were laws in place allowing authorities to prosecute those who caused unnecessary harm to wild or domestic animals and the pet owner, who does not want to be identified, said her three-year-old cat, Dexter, fell off a dividing wall between her house and her neighbour’s and onto a fence lined with the spikes. She says Dexter had to be treated by vets after he suffered puncture wounds to his leg.
