Going for gold in St Mary

The weathervane and accompanying metal cockerel had to be cut off from the top of the spire of St Mary’s Parish Church last month because of corrosion.

The cockerel was regilded with gold leaf and both the metal bird, weathervane and lightning conductor were reattached this week.

John Le Bailly (67), the churchwarden and treasurer and who helped to carry out the work on the weathervane, said: ‘It’s fantastic to see the cockerel back there. It looks bigger than it ever did because it’s so shiny.’
