New health charge ‘may lead to more taxes in the future’

Last week, long-awaited details of the new health charge were published in the Medium Term Financial Plan Addition, an update on ministers’ spending plans for 2016 to 2019 which were approved in October.

Islanders who pay the full 20 per cent income tax rate will be charged an extra 0.5 per cent ‘health charge’ in 2018, which will rise to one per cent the following year, if the MTFP Addition is approved in the autumn.

But Deputy John Le Fondré, who is the chairman of the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel which monitors States financial plans, said that the health charge could pave the way for similar taxes to be introduced in the future, such as to pay for the new hospital.
