As the deadline for lodging the Medium Term Financial Plan addition looms, Scrutiny politicians looked on in disbelief and with concern on Thursday when Social Security Minister Susie Pinel admitted that ministers had no details about the new charge.

She said that they did not know when the health charge might come into force, how much it would be, or how the scheme would be administered.

Deputy Richard Renouf, chairman of the Health and Social Security Scrutiny Panel, said he was ‘amazed’ and ‘astonished’ at the revelation, while panel member Deputy Geoff Southern said he was ‘speechless’ that with 29 days to go until the new charge was due to be proposed, ministers had not yet agreed even the most basic details.
