Last year the Education Department spent £7.8 million to support 1,170 university students in the UK.

In the States yesterday, Assistant Education Minister Steve Pallett said that additional funds would be available to help students in the future, and that discussions with the Treasury were ongoing.

Education do not yet know how much extra money will be allocated to higher education, but it will not be used to introduce a full student loan scheme and earlier this month Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans insisted that the States would not introduce a full loan system because it could not afford it.
