People smugglers ‘scoping out’ Jersey as route to UK

The border force say that some of the organised crime groups have been operating from Paris and last year ‘individuals were sent with the intention of using Jersey as a back-door entry into the UK’.

The department also said that they have separate intelligence which indicates that some individuals involved with the crime groups had travelled to Jersey from the UK with the intention of ‘scoping out’ the Island’s immigration controls.

No specific examples were detailed in the report.

In total last year there were 19 refusals of entry at the Island’s borders, compared with an average of 22 per year between 2010 and 2014.
