‘We’re not going to come out of this one’

Howard Durell says it took less than a minute for his vessel to be dragged 90° vertically upright in the water and overturn after becoming tangled in a lobster pot rope.

The 66-year-old, along with his friend Graeme Gautier (58), were catapulted into the water and spent four hours clinging to the hull of their boat until they were rescued by commercial fisherman Mark Green.

Today, Mr Durell said that Mr Green had saved their lives, as the pair had drifted from La Rocque to St Catherine’s Breakwater and 1½ miles out to sea, and were being taken with the current towards Sark in choppy waters. ‘Mark deserves a medal,’ said Mr Durell. ‘He saved our lives – it’s as simple as that.’
