Fee-paying schools could have subsidies cut under reform plans

In 2010 the then Education Minister James Reed put forward plans to cut annual subsidies to fee-paying schools by nearly half, but the proposals were shelved following an angry reaction from parents who feared a massive a hike in fees.

Currently, all fee-paying schools in Jersey still receive subsidies, but with the States needing to find additional savings to meet their aim of filling a £145 million deficit by 2019, Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans confirmed that the provision is under review.

However, Deputy Bryans underlined the fact that the review was ‘continuing in a calm and measured way’, and that the States would avoid a situation that would lead to a substantial rise in fees for parents.
