Half of States Members ‘should be women’

Reacting to news that there are now more women coming forward to stand for election in Guernsey, Deputy Louise Doublet said that she would like to see a similar trend in Jersey.

Currently, just 12 of Jersey’s 49 elected politicians are women, and there is only one female among the Island’s eight elected senators – Dr Zoe Cameron.

In Guernsey, just five of the 47-strong States Assembly are women, but following a lengthy campaign spearheaded by the Guernsey branch of women’s campaign group Soroptimist International, 13 women candidates have already stepped forward to stand for office at the next general election, which takes place on 27 April, with more expected to follow suit before nominations close at the end of the month.
