Senator Andrew Green yesterday rejected the idea of introducing a new political portfolio focusing on children, saying that the Island could benefit from having an independent children’s commissioner or ombudsman who could hold ministers accountable or call for action where and when necessary.

Senator Green appeared before the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, which sat at Seaton Place yesterday for its final session, to hear about the challenges that face Jersey when it comes to safeguarding children, the changes that need to be made to the system and what aspirations are held by different organisations.

The next public phase of the inquiry is due to start on Monday 16 May at St Paul’s Centre, where parties will make submissions about what the panel should consider in compiling its report later this year.
