Infrastructure workers to be balloted on strike

Workers have been warned for months that they could face compulsory redundancies or have their work transferred to private contractors, as Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel tries to find £4.6 million of savings from his £25 million annual budget.

Facing a barrage of questions over the issue in States question time this week, Deputy Noel moved to provide assurances to staff, including that he would try to minimise compulsory redundancies and any private contractors would have to be ‘responsible employers’.

But after turning up to the States sitting to watch the Deputy speak, Unite the Union spokesman Nick Corbel said that the minister showed that he was not interested in the welfare of his workforce and that industrial-action ballot will commence this week.
