New Burger King ‘may thwart efforts to tackle child obesity’

Dr Susan Turnbull was the only Islander to lodge a formal objection against the plans, which she says could be the turning point in fuelling a further rise of what she described as ‘already alarming’ childhood obesity rates.

In a three-page letter to the Planning Department she outlines concerns over the restaurant’s impact on the character of its surroundings close to St Helier’s Town Hall, and says the chain would tarnish the Island’s reputation as a quality destination and signal that the capital was ‘going downmarket’, however her comments focus largely on her concerns about public health, saying that there are already worrying levels of obesity among the Island’s children.

The franchise is being brought to the Island by retail group Sandpiper CI and is due to be set up on the ground floor of International House at the Parade – the former home of the Fabric Factory and the retail group said that it preferred not to comment in response to Dr Turnbull’s objections.
