Heathrow incident prompts warning against laser misuse

Ports of Jersey said that there was one incident in 2015 and five in 2014, although there have been no reports so far this year.

Four of the incidents involved people using lasers – which often come in the form of small pens which can be bought for just a few pounds – targeting commercial aircraft as they were coming into land, and two involved targeting the airfield.

All the incidents have been reported to the States police, but attempts to trace the culprits have been unsuccessful.

Earlier this week the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) called on the UK government to reclassify lasers as offensive weapons to give the police more power to arrest people for possessing them if they have no good reason to do so.
