Maria Aurelina Da Silva, who has a history of stealing from town stores dating back to the mid 2000s, tried to steal a jacket, a handbag and two long-sleeve shirts totalling £60 from BHS on 9 December.

The 52-year-old was stopped by a store worker when she began to behave suspiciously, the Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

Advocate Lauren Glynn, defending, said that her client, who pleaded guilty to larceny, had not committed any similar offences for three-and-a-half years and that the offence was a ‘one-off’.
