Waitrose plan to source vegetables locally ‘delayed by the mild winter’

In June 2105, Sir Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, which includes Waitrose, said they were aiming to source all core line vegetables, such as cauliflowers, carrots, parsnips and herbs, for their supermarkets in Jersey from Channel Island growers by last autumn.

But the plans have been thwarted by months of record-breaking mild temperatures that have caused winter vegetables to ripen too early to reach retail markets.

This week, Gary Grace, fresh food buyer for Waitrose in the Channel Islands, said: ‘Unfortunately, challenging weather conditions last year conspired against us, but we remain as determined as ever to achieve our target.’
