Hospital ‘requires major repairs in next three years’

Experts analysed six main areas of the Hospital’s blocks, from their physical condition to their energy consumption, within a survey to appraise the buildings’ fitness for purpose.

Isolated areas within the granite block, which do not meet fire safety standards, were flagged up within the report as ‘high-risk concerns’, while items stored in the corridors because of lack of storage space were also highlighted as a fire risk because they could ‘impede the means of escape’.

The report, by building surveyors Sweett Group, also found that although all blocks were operational they required major repair or replacement within the next three years.

It noted that the external building fabric of the Parade building, which was built in 1987, and of the Gwyneth Huelin Wing, built in 1979, was ‘nearing the end of its intended life, requiring major refurbishment works to roofs, windows and external doors’.
