States mark death of former Lieut-Governor

STATES Members observed a one-minute silence on Tuesday for General Sir Peter Whiteley – a former Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey who has died in hospital in the UK at the age of 95.

Sir Peter served the Island between 1979 and 1984 and was the first former Royal Marine to hold the post.

Government House announced his death in a statement issued on Tuesday morning. He is survived by his wife Nancy.

He was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey following his retirement from military service in 1979.

After leaving the Island he made his home in Devon and served as a Deputy Lieutenant of the county.
