Chief officers ignorant of their costs, hearings show

Deputy Andrew Lewis, whose committee this week heard from four officers – Social Security chief officer Ian Burns, Environment chief officer Andrew Scate, Economic Development chief Mike King and director of Education Justin Donovan – said the responses gave committee members ‘a real sense of the change in financial culture that is needed across the organisation’.

In particular, said Deputy Lewis, ‘one chief officer admitted not knowing how much his departmental offices cost to heat and light’. He said that ‘another told us they knew more about the operating costs of their grant recipients than they did about the costs of their own department’.

Deputy Lewis expects to present a report to the Assembly during the second quarter of the year.
