Rapist is sentenced 20 years on through DNA

Andrew Shane Hannam (44), who on Thursday was given a six-and-a-half year custodial sentence, was tracked down by States police detectives as part of a cold-case investigation into the sex attack he committed in St Helier on 25 February 1995.

He is currently serving a life sentence in a medium-security hospital in the UK for the ‘horrific’ rape and attempted rape of a mother and her ten-year-old daughter after tricking his way into their home by pretending to be a police officer. That case was described by the presiding judge at the Old Bailey as one of the most serious he had ever heard.

The defendant, who was caught due to dramatic advances in DNA technology, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault. He will serve his sentence at a medium-security hospital in the UK.
