Fire crews ‘stretched’ by blazes and a crash

On call, part-time staff were called in to help their full-time colleagues after firefighters were called to a blaze in Grouville shortly before 6 pm while the service was already tackling a tumble dryer fire in a basement flat in Rouge Bouillon.

The States Fire and Rescue Service said a ‘large’ fire had taken hold on the first-floor of the Grouville property and that the home’s only resident had fled the premises before firefighters arrived. It is suspected that the blaze was caused by a faulty immersion heater.

A total of 14 crew members were called to at the scene.

The service was also called to a crash on Route de St Aubin near the People’s Park at around 6 pm where a motorbike and car had collided, but were asked to stand-down en route to the scene. The motorcyclist was taken to hospital, but is not thought to have suffered critical or life-changing injuries.

States Fire and Rescue crew commander Craig Channing praised the department’s ‘on-call’ part-time staff.
