Crew battle to repair storm-hit Clipper in 18-ft waves

A ventilation cowl on the forward deck became detached during the journey from Portsmouth and the vessel had to alter its course to enable staff to work on an open deck to repair the damage.

Condor praised the bravery of staff and said that although the captain positioned the ship to provide the best possible conditions, the crew faced significant motion as they were repeatedly hit by sea spray.

In a statement, Captain Fran Collins, executive director of operations at Condor, said: ‘ All of our crews train and prepare for these kind of situations, and as always, take every possible safety precaution.

‘Nonetheless, their dedication, bravery and skill yesterday meant that Commodore Clipper was repaired in particularly rough seas and able to continue her journey to the Channel Islands maintaining lifeline links in the depths of winter storms.’
