Mild weather spells disaster for daffodil growers

Daffodils are planted to meet consumer demand from mid-January, with the season peaking around Mother’s Day, which this year is on 6 March.

However, with the flowers blooming earlier than normal, the Island’s biggest local producer and exporter, Woodside Farms in Trinity, is currently having to leave daffodils in the fields.

Charlie Gallichan, who heads the family business, said this could result in a shortage of daffodils for Mother’s Day, even though it falls early this year.

‘I don’t know what the final outcome will be because the daffodil season is a long one and this year’s is the worst season my father can remember. We have 70 to 100 vergées of early varieties and that is close to being a complete write-off,’ he said.
