Islanders told they will have to ‘put up’ with current congestion or pay more to park

A recent progress report to the 2010 Sustainable Transport Policy revealed that peak hour traffic levels have decreased by 1.6 per cent since 2010. That is despite plans to reduce congestion during peak times by 15 per cent.

However, Transport Minister Eddie Noel has defended the figures, which were not altered to take into account an approved amendment to the policy which specified that the cost of motoring should not be ‘disproportionately increased’.

Deputy Noel, who took over as minister last year, has said that unless parking charges are increased to deter motorists from driving to town then the initial 15 per cent target cannot be met.
