A FATHER and son from a Jersey crime family have been ordered to pay almost £265,000 after being jailed over a failed plot to execute Jersey’s biggest known drugs smuggling operation.

Richard ‘Ziggy’ Norris and his son Liam were sent to prison by the Royal Court in 2013 after attempting to flood Jersey with almost £3 million worth of cannabis resin concealed inside specially made bitumen moulds packed into freight ships.

The haul would have been enough for almost 250,000 individual deals and would have supplied the Island’s cannabis market for almost a year.

Richard Norris – a serial criminal who was once a major figure in the Island’s biker scene – was jailed for seven years and three months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to import cannabis.

His then 32-year-old son was jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to the same charge and further counts of possession and possession with intent to supply.

He also admitted being involved in other wholesale cannabis deals in Jersey.

After a four-day confiscation hearing, the Superior Number of the Royal Court yesterday ruled that Liam had made £1.8 million from drug dealing and ordered him to pay £252,392.

The court found that his father made £819,975 and ordered him to pay £12,086.

During the original sentencing hearing, the court was told that the pair were arrested when the States and Staffordshire police launched a series of co-ordinated raids in March 2012.

Liam was arrested in Jersey and his father was detained in his home town of Burton-on-Trent.

The following day, police searched a container in an industrial park in Burton and found 240 kg of cannabis resin packed into French potato boxes.

Four others were sentenced for laundering the proceeds of the operations.
