Dreamed up by Anthony Lewis, who at the time was assistant editor of the JEP, the idea behind the gesture was to show the victims of the Asian tsunami, which had taken place 35 days earlier, that the people of Jersey stood side by side with them – in terms of showing that they cared and in raising funds to help them.
