An existing cable, EDF1, broke in 2012 after 28 years and has been inactive since that time meaning that at present there is only one working electricity link to France
But the JEC has revealed plans to have three working cables between Jersey and France and are in the early stages of planning for the additional installation, entitled Normandie 1.
Chris Ambler, chief executive of Jersey Electricity, said: ‘We are evaluating for Normandie 1 and are proposing that it would be jointly invested between ourselves and Guernsey.
‘It is something we are exploring although nothing has been confirmed at this stage.’
