The driver is thought to have been hit in the eye by glass from the windscreen which was shattered by the wave. The force of the wave also battered the bonnet and roof of the car.
The driver was taken by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency department of the General Hospital but the extent of his injuries is not yet known.
There is also believed to have been a passenger in the car who was not injured.
The driver was turning his car around near Gorey Pier when the wave crashed over the wall and hit the car.
