Island Games: Athletics

A clash of dates means some athletes have not been able to participate in all the events they could and some will leave on Thursday evening to travel to Gateshead for theEnglish Schools Championships on 1-2 July.

Women’s team

Hazel Le Cornu (27): Design engineer at Rolls Royce, Derby. Former Loughborough University student. Events: 400m, 4 x 400m relay and High Jump. Going to her third Games after Rhodes 2007 and Aland 2009 where she has won two golds and one silver. Hopes to retain the 4 x 400m relay gold medal for a third Games.

Arlene Lewis: Works as a group manager. Events: 5,000m, 10,000, and half marathon provisional entries. Lists selection for this year’s Games, her first, as her best sporting achievement. Hoping to record a personal best.

Claire Wilson (25): Shop assistant. Events: 800m, 1,500m and 4 x 400m. Formerly competed for the Shetland team and won double gold in 2005. Has been to numerous Games since 2001 but making her debut for Jersey and hoping to win a medal and set a new PB in the 800m.

Gemma Dawkins (20): Cardiff University student. Events: 200m, 400m, 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays. Going to her third Games after winning three golds and one silver in Aland 2009 and featuring in Rhodes 2007. Reached the 400m semi-final at the Youth Commonwealth Games. Hopes to PB and medal in the 400m events.

Helen Butler: Marketing manager. Events: 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay. This will be her second Games and aims include making a final and getting a PB. Devon champion three years in a row.

Jo Gorrod (40): Investec Trust employee. Event: Half-marathon. Won gold in the 10,000m and silver in the 1,500m and 5,000m events in Rhodes 2007 and previously competed in Guernsey 1987 and 2003. Set a personal best in this year’s London Marathon. Hoping for an individual and team medal.

Molly Jéhan (16): Beaulieu student. Events: 100m, 100m hurdles and 4 x 100m relay. Making her Games debut and hoping to PB. Hampshire champion and bronze medallist at the Jeux des Iles.

Sophie Twinam (21): Cardiff University graduate. Events: 400m hurdles, 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay. This will be her fourth Games and won gold in Aland two years ago. Has placed fifth in the English Schools Championships.

Katie Thompson (34): Mum of three girls and physiotherapist. Event: Half-marathon. The Isle of Wight will be her first Island Games. After moving to the Island in 2008 she then heard about the 2009 Island Games and made it her goal to represent Jersey in 2011. Finished 16th in the Cardiff Half Marathon in October with a PB of 1.24 hr.

Shadine Duquemin (16): Beaulieu student. Events: Discus and shot putt. Competed in the World Youth Games and hoping to get two personal bests, two golds and two records on her Games debut.

Men’s team

Robbie Stenhouse (15): Victoria College student. Events: 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m. Making his Games debut and hoping to make the final in at least one event and get a PB. Has qualified for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Andrew Murfin (33): Director of Sport at Victoria College. Event: 10,000m. Going to his third Games after Rhodes 2007 and Aland 2009. Hoping for a personal best. Lists his best sporting achievement as making his professional football debut.

Elliott Dorey (17): Hautlieu student. Events: 800m and 1,500m. Will be racing at his first Island Games but has previously competed at the junior Jeux des Iles where he won two bronze and a silver medal. Aiming for Commonwealth Youth Games qualification and PBs.

Daniel Halksworth (25): Professional ironman triathlete. Event: Half-marathon. Going to his seventh Games after appearing also in triathlon and swimming. Won 10,000m bronze in Aland 2009. Swimming gold medallist at Commonwealth Youth Games and second in the Aquathlon World Championships.

Ben Silva (32): PE teacher at Victoria College. Events: 100m, 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay. Going to his third Games after Rhodes 2007 and Aland 2009 and hopes to medal in a relay event. Has represented the Island in eight different sports and also spent time coaching at Sheffield United FC, including coaching current England internationals Phil Jagielka and Kyle Walker.

Zane Duquemin (19): Student at St Mary’s University. Events: Discus and shot putt. Won two golds in Aland 2009 and aiming for two personal bests and two Games records this time around. Competed in the World Junior Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

James Cunningham (27): Highlands College student. Events: 5,000m and 10,000m. Going to his first Games and hoping for a personal best with a medal being a bonus. Winner of the Jersey Half Marathon.

Paul Derrien (39): Investment director at Collins Stewart, London. Events: Hammer, shot putt and discus. The Isle of Wight will be his 11th Games. Finished sixth in the hammer final in Aland 2009.

Peter Irving (28): Residential child care officer. Events: 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4 x 100m relay and 4 x 400m relay. Going to his seventh Games and aiming for PBs and a medal. Best sporting achievement was getting to the final of the English Schools 400m hurdles.

Dave Ibbotson (39): Lawyer. Event: 5,000m. Going to his second Games after finishing ninth in the 10,000m in Aland two years ago and hoping to run sub 16.30 mins this time around. Set a PB on his way to winning the Battersea Park 5,000m race.

Donnie Rockett (31): Lift engineer. Event: Hammer. The five times all Ireland champion, and a Republic of Ireland international representative. Making his Games debut and hoping to get a PB and set an Island record.

Ross Jeffs (19): Studying Sports Science at Bath University. Events: Triple jump, long jump and 4 x 100m. Going to his second Games after Aland 2009 and hoping to medal with long jump his strongest event at the moment. Channel Islands record holder in triple jump and long jump.

Bruno Francisco (33): Architect. Event: Half-marathon. Making his Games debut and aiming to beat his personal best of 1.14 hr and bring home a team medal. Represented Great Britain in last year’s World Duathlon Championships finishing 13th in his age group. Has turned to triathlon this year and recently competed in Switzerland (70.3) half ironman.

Sam Dawkins (17): Victoria College student. Events: 200m, 400m, 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay. Hampshire champion, going to his first Games and hoping to run a PB and post a sub 50 second time in the 400m.

Simon Phelan (25): Coach Education Student at Birmingham University. Event: High Jump. The Isle of Wight is his fourth Games after the Isle of Man 2001, Guernsey 2003 and Shetland 2005. Has been to the Commonwealth Games and hopes to qualify for the World Student Games so needs a jump of 2.18m.

Sunday 26 June: Half-marathon. Men: Hammer, High Jump, 200m heats, 800m heats. Women: 100m heats, triple jump.

Monday 27 June: Men: 400m hurdles heats, 200m, 800m semis, shot putt, 400m hurdles, 5,000m. Women: 100m, 1,500m, 100m, javelin, 400m semis.

Tuesday 28 June: 4 x 100m heats. Men: long jump qualifying, discus, 110m hurdles, 800m. Women: Shot putt, 100m hurdles, 400m.

Wednesday 29 June: 4 x 400m heats. Men: 100m heats, 400m heats, long jump, javelin, 3,000m steeplechase. Women: 800m heats, 200m heats, hammer, high jump, 10,000m.

Thursday 30 June: Men: 1,500m heats, 400m, 100m. Women: 200m, discus, 400m hurdles, long jump, 800m.

Friday 1 July: 4 x 100m, 4 x 400m. Men: triple jump, 1,500m, 10,000m. Women: 5,000m.
