Four sent off as Jersey miss out

‘To say I’m disappointed would be a bit of an understatement,’ said Jersey captain Greg Ruellan afterwards.

‘You can’t take four of your best players out of the game, hoping to win, even though the players we replaced them with gave a really good account of themselves. But so many players sent off – it simply doesn’t help.’

Ruellan made the point that, with local umpires in control, perhaps some of the decisions wouldn’t have resulted in his squad players being sidelined late in the game, at a time when Jersey seemed to be comfortably in the lead.

But, as umpire John Wells said: ‘After five fouls you have to go. The rules are as simple as that. This was a good game, intensely competitive. All we do is to play the game according to the rules. After that, it’s all down to the players.’
