Cook, a professional with top Spanish league team Villajoyosa, came on for the final five minutes of their World Cup qualifier match against Russia.

Despite suffering a 38-20 defeat in Madrid, it was a good day for the former Jersey RFC and Bedford rugby player who is eligible to play for the country after moving to Spain more than five years ago.

Matthew’s father, Colin Cook, was at the match and said: ‘It was a very relaxed occasion, nothing like Twickenham, and there were around 5,000 spectators at the stadium in Madrid.

‘It was really great to see Matt make his debut. He missed out in the last match against Romania after it was postponed, because of freezing conditions, and came on in the last five minutes against Russia as the number six, wing forward.’
