‘Amazing’ show continues in Guadeloupe

JERSEY will leave the Caribbean tomorrow with 26 Jeux des Iles medals after a final flurry on the fourth day of competition in Guadeloupe.

The athletes were again in fine form with Felicity Johnson-Deeley completing a hat trick of silver medals as she again came second, this time in the 3,000m.

Stephen de la Haye set a personal best as he cleared 1.93m to take the high jump silver while team-mate Ross Jeffs also set a PB with a jump of 1.78m.

Kathryn Rothwell collected her second silver medal of the Games with a throw of 10.43m in the shot, while the girls’ 4 x 400m relay team of Nicola Milner, Jenna Murphy, Lisa Luce, and Gemma Dawkins wrapped up a great week for the athletes with a silver medal.

The swimmers put on a spectacular finish in the pool as they took another four medals – two silver and two bronze.

Charlotte Manning completed a hat trick of silvers as she was second in the 200m breast-stroke in 2.47.30 min and Grace Le Couilliard picked up her second silver medal, in the 100m backstroke finishing in 1.12.32 min.

Katy Glendening won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle and the three swimmers were then joined by Charlotte Samson to win the bronze medal in the 4 x 100m girls’ medley relay.

Tom Gallichan just missed out on his fourth medal of the Games as he was fourth in the 100m backstroke.

Jersey also featured in the demonstration sport of surfing – and what a demonstration they put on in taking three medals.

Nathan Elms won the U16s class gold, with Matthew Chapman taking bronze.

Dan Garton finished with a bronze medal in the bodyboard event and Lucy Goddard was fifth in the girls’ surfing contest.

In the final of the men’s gymnastics, Matthew Hill shared fourth place on the rings, and was just 0.1 points off the bronze medal, and he took fifth on the vault.

The tennis teams had a disappointing day as they both lost matches to the Azores in straight sets meaning the girls (Octavia Lamb and Alyssia Johnson) take on Elba, who they beat earlier in the week, for seventh place today. The boys’ team of Scott Clayton and George Dupays face the Isle of Wight also for seventh place.

The table tennis was over quickly for Max Tupper and Scott Cassin yesterday as having reached the last 16 they were both dismissed in the first of the knockout rounds – Tupper losing to the eventual winner, from Cyprus.

The sailing also finished yesterday with Laurence Carter securing 15th overall, after taking 17th and eighth in the last two races, and George Moisan took 18th overall having finished 20th and 22nd.

In the girls’ event, Elizabeth Ellison was 18th and 16th and secured 17th overall.

The tennis is the last of the sports to conclude for Jersey and precedes the closing ceremony which is to be held in Sainte Anne later this evening – a chance for Jersey to celebrate eclipsing their previous performances in the Jeux des Iles with this record number of medals.
