Large team hope for medal repeat

SWIMMING boasts the second-largest team for Jersey in next week’s Jeux des Iles, in Guadaloupe, with nine selected from a mix of the two Island swimming clubs.

The team, sponsored by KPMG, will be based in Les Abymes on the Grande-Terre island and will no doubt hope to continue the good form of Jersey in the pool as last year the swimmers brought home four medals.

Bronze medallist in Corsica, Charlotte Manning, returns from Tigers Swimming Club and she is joined for a second year by club-mates Charlotte Samson, Misha Jackson, Tom Gallichan and James Payne.

Jersey Swimming Club’s Emily Ritzema and Conor Mallet join Tigers’ Katy Glendening and Grace Le Couilliard in making their debut.

Team manager Jackie Huelin will be joined by coach Keiron Bowbrick and assistant coach Nathan Jégou.

‘The selection was made by the Jersey Amateur Swimming Association and was based on qualifying times and on the number of qualifying times the swimmers had,’ said Bowbrick.

‘It’s a strong squad and we’ve got some good chances for medals. It’s going to be an outdoor 50m pool which is a bit different from last year’s 25m indoor pool but they are all looking forward to the event and should do well.’
