Tough test for tennis quartet

FOUR young tennis players will be representing Jersey at the Jeux des Iles in Guadaloupe.

Millfield School student, Scott Clayton, returns for a second stint in this competition and teamed with Caesarean Tennis Club’s George Dupays will look to improve on the Island’s best finish for the boys’ team of fifth last year. Octavia Lamb (Grainville Tennis Club) and Alyssia Johnson (Caesarean) make their debuts and have the bonus of going into the competition seeded, based on the 2006 results when the Jersey girls placed fourth.

The four will be competing over six days on courts in Le Gosier. Games will be played on either hard or clay courts and in keeping with the Jeux des Iles, the competition will be of a high standard.

‘It’s a relatively young team as all the players are under-14 which is good as they can only improve from this and gain experience. It’s a good team and they all know each other, so will form good doubles pairings,’ said coach Andrew Evans.

‘This might be a big ask for them, it’s difficult to judge as you don’t know what the other teams will be like, but on past performances getting to the top four would be a great achievement.

‘This will be a great challenge and the team should have some really tough matches which is great because you want to go out there and be pushed and come back better players.’
