New course to tackle domestic abuse

The ADAPT programme – Accredited Domestic Abuse Prevention Training – helps men who get caught up in the cycle of domestic violence by encouraging them to think about why they abuse.

Participants are shown strategies and techniques to avoid using abusive behaviour during a 30-week programme that covers five modules.

ADAPT programme co-ordinator Nigel Collier-Webb said that the festive period was often one of the most stressful times and could be a high-risk time for domestic abuse and violence.

He said that domestic abuse was on the increase, with 700 cases recorded in Jersey each year.

It is believed that figure represents just half of the problem because 50 per cent of cases go unrecorded.
