Death crash driver jailed for five years

Yesterday the Royal Court heard that Duarte Nuno Poeira Luis crawled from the wreckage of his crashed car, switched off the lights, removed the key from the ignition and fled the scene in Grouville last January.

The 25-year-old, who was more than twice over the drink-drive limit, drove his overloaded Vauxhall Astra car around a bend at too high a speed for the wet conditions. The restaurant worker lost control of the car, which had five of his friends in, and smashed into some granite gate pillars by Grouville Church.

Family relative Bruno Teixeira (32) died at the scene and his friend, Domingas da Encarnaceo (28), was pronounced dead in hospital later that night. Both men, who were chefs working in Gorey, were back-seat passengers and were not wearing seatbelts.
