Late bid to avert strikes

The prison officers, who say that excessive overtime is destroying happy family lives, have threatened to strike as early as next week if they are not given a 37-hour week. Paramedics and other ambulance staff say that they will consider withdrawing overtime if they do not get a pay rise. Both issues are expected to be on the agenda of the States Employment Board, which meets today.

The board is chaired by Senator Frank Walker, who sits with Senators Terry Le Sueur, Mike Vibert and Freddie Cohen. They are expected to discuss whether they can accede to any of the demands of the disgruntled States employees and prevent the threatened actions taking place.
