St Helier backs Funchal twinning

All 45 town ratepayers who attended the meeting voted in support of a proposition to sign a twinning agreement with Funchal. Former Deputy Mike Wavell, the chairman of Jersey Side By Side, proposed the motion. He said that Jersey had benefited greatly from the signing of a Friendship Agreement with Madeira ten years ago and that it was time to recement the relationship. ‘Not only will this have great mutual benefits to us, but will be sending out an important message of recognition and respect between our cultures and communities,’ he said.
