The latest air and sea transport figures show that from January to August 820,683 travellers arrived in the Island compared to 780,554 in the same period last year.

During August alone, 11,361 more people came into the Island than in August 2006, including residents and day trippers.

The biggest percentage increase was in arrivals from continental Europe, up by 11.

% to 45,864 passengers.

In terms of air transport, some airports were more popular than others.

Over 22,000 have come through Heathrow since the direct route reopened earlier this year, but Gatwick arrivals were down by 2% (176,300).

The Luton connection has been very popular, with over 10,000 arrivals from there this year.
