Sandpiper go for older staff

Sandpiper CI, who run Checkers, Safeway, and Wine Warehouse and the Marks & Spencer Jersey franchise, have discarded the compulsory retirement age of 65 and removed all age restrictions on employing staff.

The new campaign, Extend your Shelf Life, was set up following the success of a similar initiative run by DIY chain B&Q in which they encouraged over-50s to apply for jobs.

Sandpiper chief executive Tony O’Neill said: ‘It is fundamentally wrong to have any age discrimination.

People should be judged on their merits, and age is of no relevance.

We have always had a culturally diverse workforce, and we are now looking to extend our diversity by seeking to employ more mature people.

We are interested in people who will make a difference and help us improve our products and services.

Human resources manager Jan McCarthy said: ‘We are hoping that people from all walks of life will apply for these positions, particularly older people who often act as mentors to younger colleagues, sharing life skills and knowledge.

The company will operate the same recruitment policy in Guernsey and Alderney, and advertisements for jobs will be seen in local papers shortly.
