‘Restore St Helier as a desirable place to live’

Senator Cohen explained that making people, including the rich, want to move to St Helier could be one way of saving the countryside from development. Speaking as he launched a review of the Island Plan, which sets out the direction of future planning and development policy, he said that he would like to restore the appeal that town enjoyed in the 19th century. When Victoria sat on the throne, merchants lived in the grand villas and elegant town houses that Senator Cohen says have sadly been chopped into flats. The review of the current Island Plan, which is due to frame policy between 2002 and 2012 and is expected to cost up to £500,000, has been launched by the minister to address the changing needs of the Island.
