The Community Relations Trust, which has organised the conference, had planned for 180 people to attend the all-day event at the Royal Jersey Showground, but acting chairman, the Rev Bill Matthews, said that they would try to cater for everyone. Delegates will be able to sign up for one of several workshops before reporting back at the end of the day to discuss ways to raise levels of respect in the Island. Mr Matthews said: ‘The response is wonderful, especially since our outreach and advertising was pretty homemade and ad hoc. We have had great support from the media.’ He added: ‘I think the essential aim is to make a substantial move towards understanding the need for respect, that is respect for oneself and one’s neighbours as it were. He added that he hoped delegates would look practically at all the opportunities there were for improving relationships at work and in every kind of practical situation that Islanders face.
