Syvret tells staff to ‘blow the whistle’ on managers

In an e-mail to Health and Social Services staff announcing the proposed appointment of Senator Ben Shenton as assistant minister, Senator Syvret told the employees of the department that they could get in touch with him if they had issues with senior staff or policies that they wanted to complain about anonymously. The vote of no confidence that the minister is expected to face next month was sparked by Senator Syvret’s public criticism of senior social services staff, and complaints that child protection standards were ‘failing bitterly’. In his e-mail, he wrote: ‘Although recent demands have been made upon me – by certain senior civil servants and senior politicians – that I reveal the identity of those who have spoken to me in confidence, please rest assured that I will never ever betray any such confidence. ‘In 17 years as a politician, I have learnt that the public interest is well served by people being able to speak to their politicians without fear. If you have concerns, feel free to get in touch. Your identity will be secure with me.’
