When the 3% tax is levied, all businesses with a taxable turnover of more than £300,000 will have to register and effectively become tax collectors for the department.

To help them cope with their responsibilities under the law, the Treasury department have prepared books about the records that need to be kept, and visits by tax officers, as well as general guides to the law for businesses.

The books are available online from the www.

ov.

e site, and from next week hard copies will be available from the Income Tax department, Jersey Library, Jersey Business Venture and the business centres at HSBC and Lloyds TSB.

Income tax director Steve Lowthorpe said: ‘From next spring, all businesses with an annual taxable turnover of £300,000 and above will be liable to register for GST.

‘We are doing everything we can to make it easy for businesses to understand and implement the tax.

We are already offering businesses free, one to one consultations and nearly 100 companies have so far taken advantage of these educational visits.
