Senior hospital spokesman James Le Feuvre said today that an investigation had shown that specialist cleaners had been called in over the weekend to clean the ceiling tiles in the outpatients area at a time when minimal disruption would be caused to the public. ‘It appears the cleaners left the containers by the entrance to be collected at 7.30 am on Monday, and that one of them had a slight leak which had left liquid on an impermeable floor,’ he said. The Fire Service were called to the hospital yesterday after a woman, who noticed her shoe was contaminated, touched it and then felt a burning sensation in her hand. Mr Le Feuvre said that three people had been treated in the A & E department, including the woman who had minor burns to her hand, following the incident but were not detained. He said: ‘This was a very unfortunate and regrettable incident.’
