Collette Labey, who was Miss Battle in 1983, has helped with the parish exhibit this year along with other members of her family. Earlier this week, she received a frantic call from her son Jonathan to say that their home, which is next to the parish’s Battle shed, was being flooded. She said: ‘When I got home the whole downstairs of my house was completely submerged in water, including the side of the property where my in-laws live.’ Collette said that her daughter Katie (11) ran to the shed where the Grouville exhibit was being built and asked those there for help. Her daughter Rachael (16) and about 30 of her friends from the Grouville juniors, as well as some of the adults, put down what they were doing and rushed to the family’s assistance.
