Herbert survives the axe

The 21-year-old, who has already been capped 37 times for her country, is included in a squad of 18 players in the tournament in Manchester between 18 and 25 August.

During that time Herbert will face up to five games as England take on the Netherlands, Ireland and Italy in their pool matches with Germany, Spain, the Ukraine and Azerbaijan in the other pool.

The three girls – a sixth of the squad – who have been replaced are Doncaster’s Jo Ellis, Chelmsford’s Lisa Wooding and Rotterdam’s Helen Grant.

They have been replaced by the recently-capped Hannah Macleod and the experienced Cathy Gilliat-Smith and Anne Panter, the latter a 23-year-old who plays at Leicester, the same mainland club as Herbert.
