Instead of setting a single policy for marking the 3% tax when it is levied from next April, the department will leave it for a year to give shops the chance to decide for themselves whether to add the tax to every price on the shelf, or on the total bill at the till. Both the Chamber of Commerce and the Jersey Consumer Council have lobbied to add the tax at the till, arguing that it would be simpler and cheaper. They say a single addition would mean less rounding-up of prices and cheaper shopping bills, but those in favour of the inclusive price-marking approach proposed by Senator Ozouf say consumers should be able to see the actual prices they will be paying on the shelf.
