Cyclist is stripped of silver but Jersey keep the bronze

The apparent anomaly is because it was the IGA executive committee who took the decision to punish Escribe, not the cycling technical committee, who control the results of the sport.

The departing chairman of the Island Games Association, the Rev Brian Partington, said yesterday afternoon: ‘The message must get home that that kind of behaviour is not acceptable.

The silver medal will not be awarded.’ Escribe, who threw his cycle at Gary Hinds, causing minor facial and hand injuries, was accused of cutting corners in the race by both the Isle of Man and Jersey, who put in immediate official protests after the event at Agios Silas on Wednesday evening.

Jersey also won the team silver, with Ovenden being joined by James Patterson and Keiron Mills for the medal ceremony which was held over until last night.
