Primary footballers perform on National stage

The south-west regional runners up, who lost to Portsmouth in their regional final at the end of April, drew two of their four matches played at Keele near Stoke.

Jersey coach Rob Cameron said: ‘The boys have had a fantastic season, they can be proud of their efforts having taken the Island to this National stage for the first time ever.

‘It was a great learning experience for them all, they played well and were up against opposition with most of their opponents already on books of professional clubs.

‘Former England player and current Portsmouth striker Andy Cole watched the tournament; he played in it as a youngsters and many of the players he competed with and against have gone on to play at a good level.’ Portsmouth progressed to the final where they were defeated by Newcastle.

Other results were: West Kent, lost 2-0; Wigan 0-0; Kingston upon Hull, lost 3-0 and Brighton and Hove 1-1.

Jersey were represented by: Glenn Horman, Jay Giles (capt), Liam Vallois, Max Vasiliou, Matthew Kaye, Oliver Terry, Stephen Byrne, Kendal Pérrée and Fraser Barlow.
