Julie Renouf, owner of the Gift Cavern just outside the market, drew up the petition after hearing about the idea floated by Chamber of Commerce president Clive Spears. She received huge support from locals and tourists alike, and ministers also lined up to express their opposition. ‘It’s just overwhelming,’ she said. ‘People were charging into the shop wanting to sign it. It wasn’t just locals, visitors were appalled as well. I wish I’d had a tape recorder to record their points. It ranged from laughter at the very idea of moving the market to utter disgust. ‘It’s reassuring that people are prepared to stand up and be counted but also good to see our government are prepared to listen to us. The market is our heritage – it’s been here for two centuries. Visitors love the fact it’s still working as initially intended.’
